Sleep & Airway Evaluation
Better Sleep Starts with Better Breathing
Quality sleep is essential for your overall health, energy, and well-being. If you snore, wake up feeling tired, grind your teeth, or struggle with disrupted sleep, the cause may be related to your airway. At our practice, we take a comprehensive approach to evaluating how your oral health, jaw position, and airway may be affecting your sleep.
Because sleep-disordered breathing often has multiple contributing factors, we work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside sleep physicians, primary care physicians, ENT specialists, Neurologists, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to develop personalized treatment plans that support your long-term health.
What Is an Airway Evaluation?
An airway evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that helps determine whether the structures of your mouth, jaw, tongue, and throat may be contributing to breathing or sleep concerns.
During your evaluation, we assess:
- Your medical and sleep history
- Signs and symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing
- Jaw position and bite relationship
- Tongue posture and oral anatomy
- Airway size and function
- Evidence of teeth grinding or clenching
- Oral and facial muscle function
If your symptoms suggest a sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea, we may recommend consultation with a sleep physician for additional testing and diagnosis. A definitive diagnosis of sleep apnea is made through an appropriate sleep study interpreted by a qualified medical provider.
Signs You May Benefit from an Airway Evaluation
You may benefit from an evaluation if you experience:
- Loud or frequent snoring
- Daytime fatigue or excessive sleepiness
- Morning headaches
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Dry mouth upon waking
- Difficulty concentrating
- Frequent nighttime awakenings
- Restless sleep
- Jaw pain or TMJ symptoms
- Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
Even if your symptoms seem minor, identifying airway concerns early may help improve your overall health and quality of life.
Our Multidisciplinary Approach
Sleep and breathing disorders rarely have a single cause. That's why we believe the best outcomes come from collaboration.
Depending on your individual needs, your care may include coordination with:
- Sleep medicine physicians
- Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists
- Primary care physicians
- Neurology
- Physical therapists
- Myofunctional therapists
- Orthodontists
- Oral and maxillofacial surgeons
- Other medical specialists as appropriate
By working together, each member of your healthcare team addresses the factors within their area of expertise to create a comprehensive treatment plan.
Personalized Treatment Options
Every patient receives recommendations based on their individual evaluation, symptoms, and diagnosis.
Oral Appliance Therapy
For appropriate patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea or primary snoring, custom oral appliances may be an effective treatment option. These comfortable, custom-fabricated devices gently reposition the lower jaw during sleep to help maintain a more open airway.
Oral appliance therapy is often well tolerated and may be recommended for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or for those who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy, in collaboration with their sleep physician.
NightLase® Laser Therapy
NightLase® is a non-invasive laser treatment designed to tighten oral soft tissues through gentle laser energy without surgery or downtime. The treatment is intended to improve tissue tone in the throat and may be recommended for selected patients experiencing snoring or mild airway concerns.
Your evaluation will determine whether NightLase is an appropriate option as part of your overall treatment plan. Individual results vary, and treatment recommendations are based on your specific clinical findings.
Physical Therapy
Restricted jaw movement, muscle tension, poor posture, and neck dysfunction can contribute to both airway concerns and TMJ symptoms.
Working with a physical therapist may help:
- Improve jaw mobility
- Reduce muscle tension
- Enhance posture
- Improve breathing mechanics
- Support long-term treatment success
Myofunctional Therapy
Some patients benefit from exercises that strengthen and retrain the muscles of the tongue, lips, face, and throat. These exercises may help support healthy breathing patterns and complement other airway treatments.
Ongoing Monitoring
Because sleep and airway conditions can change over time, we continue to monitor your symptoms, appliance fit, and overall oral health while coordinating care with your healthcare team when needed.
